 Parson to Person

More on Lent, which continues through most of March!

Not really about Lent, but about you and Lent.

Luke 9:51 shows us the extent of Jesus’ determination on his appointed trip to Jerusalem for Holy Week. Luke takes from that point to the end of the gospel that bears his name to portray Jesus’ trip from Galilee to Jerusalem, and the last five chapters (19-24) focus specifically on Holy Week! I believe Luke thought that journey to be really important!

Jumping to our own lives, here and now, perhaps we could say that Luke 9:51 marks for us the Ash Wednesday we celebrated back on February 6.  That was the beginning of our journey of forty days.  God gives us the opportunity to be more resolute in our faith focus and helps us to follow through on our promise as Christians to take part in preparation for Easter. We do this through prayer, faithful worship and Christian living; through arriving with the other disciples; through dining in the upper room; and through being present (and not hiding) on Good Friday and at the resurrection.

I believe it wrong for us to anticipate all the joy and benefits of Easter if we fail to

·          be at the cross; or

·          attend that supper in the upper room; or

·          journey to the holy city with the other disciples; or

·          involve ourselves in prayer, worship and Christian living.

To do so would be to expect the “all” of Easter while giving the “nothing” of Lent. That would make Easter very cheap, wouldn’t it?

God didn’t plan it that way for us. God did plan on Easter for us, though!

    Thank God!

    Journeying faithfully with you,

     Hugh
