The Beginnings of Listowel Mennonite Church

In the early 1960's, a few Mennonite families moved into the Listowel area. They attended 2 neighbouring Mennonite churches. After casual discussion among these families and several meetings later, a church was started in a small room in the Listowel Memorial Arena building.

Amsey Martin (pastor at Glen Allan Mennonite Church) pastored our church as well. This new venture was a joint effort of Ontario Mennonite Mission Board and the Western Ontario Mennonite Mission Board.

The first service was held on April 21, 1963 at 2:15 pm with 200 people attending. The next Sunday (April 28) was regular church and Sunday School, with only 6 adults, 3 children, and Pastor Amsey Martin in attendance. More families moved in and later that year, we bought the former Pentecostal Church in town. More and more families moved into the area and in May 1965 we decided to build on the present site.

In May 1966 we moved into the new building. Our church has had 2 major building projects since then.
