MCC Notes
1. MCC is accepting funds for Myanmar cyclone relief
As a result of the recent devastating cyclone that struck Myanmar, also known as
Burma, MCC is working with partner agencies to determine how best to support
their efforts to provide relief. MCC is accepting financial contributions for *Myanmar
Emergency Assistance* and will channel these funds to cyclone relief and recovery
efforts.
2. Thank you to our Meat Canner Volunteers
We want to thank the many volunteers and churches who have supported our Meat
Canning Project this year. Over 21,000 cans of turkey were canned at the Elmira
Produce Auction April 21-24. --The Elmira Meat Canning Committee
Give us this day...
The Burma cyclone death toll has now surpassed 20 000 in the last hours, and continues to rise. A late breaking story tragically reveals that a major rice producing area was hard hit, thus deepening an already severe shortage of rice in the region.
"Our daily Bread" takes on a new and haunting meaning when realities like this one shake us almost daily in recent weeks. How are we to understand this multi-cause, and global food crisis? Blame is abundant, from rising meat consumption in China, to increased bio-fuel production, to sky-rocketing oil prices.
The realities of whole populations facing deep food insecurity are chilling. A Toronto friend told me yesterday of visiting three grocery stores searching for rice! No matter how we understand causes, we North Americans of means are in the middle of this. Most of have our daily bread. Perhaps as important as understanding the current food crisis, is to ponder how we will respond.
Maybe the first thing I need to do is to recommit to praying for my daily bread. If I am committed to starting with prayer, where might that take me?
I offer you the following tentative suggestions as possibilities for personal response... to help us not be paralyzed.
1. Pray for our daily bread. Pray with gratitude and in praying spend as much time remembering our neighbours in Myanmar/Burma who will search in vain for the family's rice.
2. Inform ourselves of how we got here and who has hopeful suggestions for long term change. We invite you to consider the mcc.org site, or that of our partner, the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
3. Eat lower on the food chain. Donate the cost of a weekly meat meal to MCC, or tithe your food budget!
4. When you can choose food grown by your neighbours, and when you must eat food from far away, look for food whose producer got a fair deal for her product when she sold it to you! Fair trade makes a difference.
5. Give generously to MCC as we respond to Burma/Myanmar and other food and disaster projects.
6. Raise your voice in compassion whenever you can to speak for just and equitable food policy in our world.
...forever and ever, Amen.
